The Power of Video Analysis

The Power of Video Analysis

We have all heard the maxim that a picture is worth a thousand words.  If that is true, video must be worth at least a million words.  Video can capture not just one moment in time, but many moments.  It can completely retell a story and allow an event to be relived.  It is no wonder that video has been applied to so many endeavors, and its applicability to sports is undeniable.  How can athletes harness the power of video analysis?

Many sports are very fast paced, and action literally happens in the blink of an eye.  As a starting point, video will ensure that an athlete, parents and coaches can see all of the action.  In addition video allows you to slow down the action so that you can see every detail, every nuance, and every individual piece of the action.  This is only where video analysis begins.

Most athletes have coaches who watch them practice and play.  The coaches provide feedback on the performance and attempt to explain mistakes that were made and the way to incorporate proper technique.  This can prove difficult though when it is a coach trying to demonstrate a mistake.  With video analysis, a coach can show a player his or her mistake.  Additionally, by slowing down the action and watching a piece of video multiple times, a player can really see and understand the mistakes that are being made.  It then becomes much easier for an athlete to understand how the correct technique is different from the mistakes that are being made.  This process is often used when coaches and players watch game film together.  However video analysis also allows a player’s performance to be shared far and wide.

There will be many times when a coach doesn’t have time to provide a player with a meaningful evaluation.   In these cases, video makes it possible for a player to choose the expert he wants to conduct the evaluation and provide the feedback.  All the player needs to do is record himself in action and then send that video to the expert for an evaluation of his performance and skills.

The second part of the equation is that the expert needs video analysis tools to provide a proper assessment.  Tools that allow the expert to mark certain points in the video and to provide written or audio annotation are critical, so that the player understands and sees exactly what the expert is evaluating.  While many video analysis tools exist, only one allows a player to select experts from around the world to conduct the evaluation of recorded video.

Athlete Rocket allows a player to record himself using any mobile device and then submit that video to one or more experts from around the world.  Using sophisticated video analysis tools, the experts can critique the player’s performance and return a detailed player evaluation outlining the strengths and weaknesses of the player’s game.

Using Athlete Rocket, a player no longer needs to rely on his coach, who frequently doesn’t have the time, for a proper player evaluation.  Instead, a player can get the feedback he needs from a marketplace of experts who have the time and experience necessary to make a difference a player’s game.
